Tasha Kavanagh Things We Have in Common

SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD 2015
'Unsettling, deeply moving and very, very readable. I loved it' NATHAN FILER, The Shock of the Fall
'A striking and highly enjoyable debut' SOPHIE HANNAH
Yasmin would give anything to have a friend . . .
And do anything to keep one.
The first time I saw you, you were standing at the far end of the playing field. You were looking down at your brown straggly dog, but then you looked up, your mouth going slack as your eyes clocked her. Alice Taylor. I was no different. I used to catch myself gazing at the back of her head in class, at her silky fair hair swaying between her shoulder blades.
If you'd glanced just once across the field you'd have seen me standing in the middle on my own, looking straight at you, and you'd have gone back through the trees to the path quick, tugging your dog after you. You'd have known you'd given yourself away, even if only to me.
But you didn't. You only had eyes for Alice.

Christiana Coy When The Night Is Dark

Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Have you ever thought you saw or heard something, but it really wasn’t what you had imagined? The boy in this book thinks he sees and hears scary things in the night but realizes those things are just ordinary objects and there is nothing to fear. We all have our own fears. Maybe our fears are not as bad as we think they are. Maybe we are imagining the worst and actually are scaring ourselves!

Robert Allan Hill Toward a Common Hope

Our churches and our country long for an expression of common hope. Over the last century, venerable voices in affirmation of a common faith and a common ground have been lifted and heard in Boston, such as those of John Dewey and Howard Thurman. The Dean of Marsh Chapel, Robert Allan Hill, has preached on themes related to a common hope since 2006. Hill has lifted the theology of hope, of a common hope, at the marrow of the gospel. We cherish our forebears, who taught about a common faith and preached a common ground. In church and culture today in America, it is the prospect of a lasting, sturdy, shared hope, more purple than either blue or red, for which we hunger. The sermons about a common hope collected here were preached at the Chautauqua Institution in August of 2017.

Tom Wilson What Kind of Friendship?

We sometimes say that Muslims and Christians are part of Abraham's family, but while you can choose your friends, you cannot choose your family. In a world filled with conflict, can Christians be friends with Muslims? When it comes to medical ethics, the economy, the environment, media, the arts, the place of women in society, political engagement, do Christians and Muslims have any views in common? Utilizing the writings of respected Muslim reformer Tariq Ramadan, Tom Wilson asks questions about what kind of friendship Christians and Muslims might have. While we disagree as to who Jesus is or how we can be saved, can we agree in our concern for a fairer, more just society? Can we work together for the common good as friends who disagree but remain respectful?

Priya Basil Be My Guest

‘A brave and beautiful exploration into food, race, memory and the very meaning of life. I read it greedily – and so will you’ Meera Sodha, author of Fresh India
The dinner table, among friends, is where the best conversations take place – talk about the world, religion, politics, culture, love and cooking. In the same way, Be My Guest is a conversation about all these things, mediated through the sharing of food. We live in a world where some have too much and others not enough, where migrants and refugees are both welcomed and vilified, and where most of us spend less and less time cooking and eating together. Priya Basil explores the meaning and limits of hospitality today, and in doing so she invites us to consider that how much we have in common may depend on what we are willing to share.

Группа авторов Confronting the Idols of Our Age

An idol is a good thing. It is good because God created it. Nothing exists that God did not create and God created all things good. So sex can be an idol, but before it was an idol it was a good creation of God. Materialism is an idol, but to have a material world was God's idea in the first place. Workaholism is an idol, but work is itself a good gift of God. What turns these good gifts of God into idols is what we have done with them. So we have common forms of idolatry expressed in consumerism, individualism, narcissism, careerism, and hedonism; while there are less familiar expressions found in omnism, fatalism, Gnosticism, relativism, positivism, and reductionism. We have put these and other things on a pedestal and made them into mini-gods. In the end they fail to deliver what they promise. These twelve mediations on a scriptural passage by faculty members of Wycliffe College, Toronto, emphasize that the good news is that God can redeem idols. Each one can be restored to its proper place in God's created order and placed under God's authority.

Things We Have in Common is, at its core, a tense psychological thriller, but Tasha Kavangh’s approach breathes originality into a genre that often feels stale. Shehzad Amin, PH.D 100 Steps Towards Success

We all aspire to do, be and have great things. Yet most of us simply haven't created the successful life we want, yet. We complain that we don't have enough money, romance, success or joy in our lives. We point fingers and blame outside problems that «happen» to us and make life more difficult. But what we need to understand and keep at the forefront of our minds is that greatness exists in all of us. It is simply up to us to pull it out of ourselves.

Regardless of personal circumstances, economic climates, and access to resources, it helps to maintain faith in the fact that we are more powerful than we think. We all can create the life we want. We just need to learn how to do it. Is there an exact «formula»? No, but there are certain common features that successful people exhibit and that anyone can practice.

They are what can jumpstart your success and attract what you want in life. You'd be hard pressed to find any high achiever who doesn't live by the 100 steps.

Linda Estes Letting Go

It's hard to find time for a spiritual recharge in the morning, but Linda Estes is here again to help with her mastery of the one-minute devotional. We like «our stuff,» don't we? We hold tight to our material things, our dreams, and our plans for our lives. We have things all lined out in our heads and hearts. Things are going along just fine and then God interrupts our stuff. He asks us to let go of something, or someone, we love. When that happens, we have two choices. We can either go along with God's plan or hang on to our own. Sometimes God asks us to let go of things simply to help us grow in our faith-walk with Him. Other times He asks us to let go so that He can do what Scripture tells us in Ephesians 3:20. God wants to «do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.» Only when we are willing to let go of whatever God is asking of us, can He then bless our socks off. When we let God be God and surrender «our stuff» so He can carry out His plan for our lives, that's when we really start living … God's way. Linda's prayer for you as you read these one-minute devotions is that they will help you find the freedom and blessings in letting go. These books are for everyone who wants to start their day right with God, and make delightful gifts.

Sharon Anderson Roe Unbreakable

Most of us fail because instead of faithfully entrusting in the Lord, we try presiding over things in which we have little to no power or authority.

However, like anything else, becoming spiritually unbreakable takes time and with time, comes patience, resilience and strength. Therefore, if you crave change, remain grounded until God gives the green light, then humbly step back and let Him take lead. In doing so, not only will you prosper, you will forever have his undying favor.

From clones, family, abortion, terrorism, and the concept of the collective to economics, nuclear power, cap and trade, renewable energy, and the politics of climate change, Everest and Bedogne do something much needed and remarkably absent in today's media. They strip away the layers of liberal and conservative ideology to look at the most talked about topics of our time from the standpoint of what the politicians have forgotten–common sense. Brought to light by logic, history, and science, the book filters the issues that in today's world every citizen, student, and educator needs to understand through what we know to be sound–that which we have gained through our day-to-day trials–our all-too-often repressed ability to see things in a practical and matter-of-fact way.

Even though you can't see them, we all have feelings. Some feelings are fluffy and make us feel good. Some are sharp and make us unhappy. Sometimes we have fluffy and sharp feelings at the same time! It's ok to have different types of feelings, but there are some things we can do to let the sharp feelings out when they get too big, or when we have too many. This picture book is ideal for children aged 5-10 to help them understand why they might experience different emotions, and what they can do to help them manage their emotions in a positive way. Written in simple language, this book will be an excellent tool for any child who finds it difficult to understand their emotions, particularly those with attachment difficulties, or a learning or developmental disability.

More Than Happiness

Modern readers tend to think of Buddhism as spending time alone meditating, searching for serenity. Stoicism calls to mind repressing our emotions in order to help us soldier on through adversity. But how accurate are our popular understandings of these traditions? And what can we learn from them without either buying in wholeheartedly to their radical ideals or else transmuting them into simple self-improvement regimes that bear little resemblance to their original aims? How can we achieve more than happiness? In More than Happiness, Antonia Macaro delves into both philosophies, focusing on the elements that fit with our sceptical age, and those which have the potential to make the biggest impact on how we live. From accepting that some things are beyond our control, to monitoring our emotions for unhealthy reactions, to shedding attachment to material things, there is much, she argues, that we can take and much that we'd do better to leave behind. In this synthesis of ancient wisdom, Macaro reframes the 'good life', and gets us to see the world as it really is and to question the value of the things we desire. The goal is more than happiness: living ethically and placing value on the right things in life.

N. Thomas Johnson-Medland Cairn-Space

Cairns have decorated the landscapes of cultures throughout time. Piles of stone-one stone placed on top of another-are set in place all over the earth to recall battles, identify burial sites, mark trails, and spur hearts and minds to remember sacred, noble, and critical events. They are landmarks. They are sacramental presences in space and time. Our lives are littered with markers of meaning. They all reveal who we are, where we have been, and offer us a jumping off point for the future. In the true mystic tradition, everything straddles meaning and is potentially available to reveal the inner life, God Himself, and all that Is. My hope is that we will begin to look at the markers of meaning in our lives and notice how we store that meaning in our heart. My hope is that we will reconstruct our prayer life and the shape of our interior world, that we will recognize the impact things have on us and discriminate toward health. Our journey in this book will be more like an amble or a wandering. We will hop from pillar to post looking for meaning and attempting to infuse things with meaning. We will look at our practices and the practices of those from our shared human past. We will begin to notice that there is a hidden depth to how we live-one that reveals we live in layers or dimensions, not simple and flat lines.
